M79612 & M79018 on arrival at Wirksworth (DPLG)

Help us restore the only

two car Derby Lightweight

Hon Secretary Alan Ross writes:

'79018/79612 were part of a batch of units 79008/79600 to 79020/79612 allocated to West Cumbria, in late 1954. 79008 to 79013 to Carlisle Upperby. 79014 to 79020 to Workington. These units served the Cumbrian Coast, Carlisle to Whitehaven, Workington to Penrith, Penrith to Carlisle and Carlisle to Silloth.

I served my apprenticeship with these units from 1957 to 1966 at Workington. The only regret I have is not taking any photographs at the time I was there. Workington Loco Shed which has now disappeared was split into two parts with roads, 1 to 5 diesel and 7 to 12 steam. Metrovick 1200hp unit D5700 to D5719 using both sides.

Having left the railway in 1966, I had no contact with DMU's until late 2000 when I found a website restoring 79018. During its time with the Civil Engineering Department it received the trailer car belonging to 79020 hence 79018/79612.

I now hold the position of secretary and take as much an active part in the restoration as is possible, which most is now being done by volunteers at the EVR.'

Anyone wishing to become a member and help to complete the restoration. Please download the form and forward it to our membership secretary.
